Piper J3 Cub L4 Conversion & Restoration
February 2004
SAS has undertaken a project to restore a 1942 Piper
L-4B. This aircraft rolled off the assembly line on December 10, 1942. The
Army Air Corp took immediate delivery and used it as a primary trainer for
over 600+ hours of flying. In 1946, the aircraft was sold as surplus to the
civilian market. At some time during the following 44 years the aircraft was
converted to the J-3 Cub configuration and got an upgrade to an 85 HP
engine. The current restoration project will return the aircraft back to its
L-4B configuration and paint job. The current owner is a retired Navy Flight
Officer and acquired the aircraft from a Sanford, Florida owner in 1990.
This ex-Navy office is very much looking forward to flying his ARMY L-4B.
Below is a picture of another L-4 and is what we expect this aircraft to
look like upon completion. For more information on the L4 "Grasshopper" click on this
link.

Unfortunately, we do not have a true "before"
picture. You can see below that the aircraft has been torn down to the
frame.
