Kid's Summer Camp Activities – 5 Camp Ideas For Children

It's that time of year again, yes the dog day's of summer are in full swing. The children are finishing up the year and graduations dot the calendar. Like many families, preparations are taking place to determine what to do this summer. Why not send the kids off to summer camp and give yourself a much needed vacation away from the kids? Perhaps you could enjoy a few days relaxing in peace in quiet, or take a day at the spa. Whether you send the kids to a established summer camp or decide to take them camping yourself, here is five fun ways to entertain your children this summer.

Ghost stories around the campfire – If you plan on taking the kids camping then you can not miss the classic that goes back through history as one of the many favorite activities to do while camping. Get the marshmallow's and hot dog's ready, it's time to scare the children. Browse the internet for some scary stories that are easy to remember, but pack a punch. Being prepared with a good story is vital to keep the action intense and the children entertained and interested.

Nature Hike – Kids are chalk full of energy and one way to burn off some of that energy before the evening sets is to send them off on a nature hike. Travel in a group to a selected destination, or set out and separate into pairs and make it a race or marathon. This is sure to tire the kids, keep them entertained, and provides a few hours of fun. Make it more difficult by completing tasks along the way or by finding certain items.

Scavenger Hunt – The good ole scavenger hunt is a sure classic. Bring a bag or box full of small items you can hide, or just locate things in the forest, camp ground, or mountains to add to the list. You can try riddles, fill in the blanks, trivia, etc. to keep the game fun and interesting. This summer camp activity is one of my personal favorites as you must work it like a puzzle with a time limit to complete it successfully.

Fishing – How can you enjoy a camping trip without a day of fishing. Find a local stream, river, or lake and grab the fishing pole and tackle. I know as a kid my father took me fishing once a week and it was some of my most memorable and enjoyable times of my childhood. If your fishing trout, bass, or many other types of edible fish then you can make it a learning experience and teach them how to clean it and cook it for dinner.

Bug identification – So your in the forest with a group of kids that are driving you nuts and your second guessing your camping trip? No worries, send them scattering about trying to locate and identify the thousands of bugs crawling around the area. You can give a list of ten or twenty and try to get them to find them all, or you can look for certain ones in groups. Some easy choices are black ants, grass hoppers, slugs, grubs, moles, crickets, frogs, etc. Add some rare ones to keep them looking. You can also swap this out for certain types of tree's, leaves, exotic plants, or whatever you choose.

Regardless of your choice, starting the camping trip with a preplanned agenda will keep your family entertained and your boredom at bay. Remember to bundle up, apply sun screen, and bring first-aid in case of an emergency. These kids camp activities should keep your children excited, engaged, learning new things, and provide them some enrichment in their time off this summer.

Family Camping Tents – Choosing The Right One

Though camping is not for everyone, there are many families that enjoy a weekend away in the wilderness. Some don’t go that far, but like to find an organized campground to camp for a few days or even a few weeks. Though some like to have travel campers when they go camping a lot, some people are only casually interested in camping, and they like to buy family camping tents for their time away from home. These are great, but there are some things to keep in mind when you buy them… You can find family camping tents in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors. Almost any version can be found to accommodate the family’s size and needs. Family camping tents are better made than ever with the advancement of technology, and are constructed of the most durable and weatherproof materials. While it may not be the optimal experience to camp in inclement weather, with these tents it doesn’t have to be the worst thing ever either. While deciding on the perfect tent for your family there is a certain criteria to keep in mind. Before style even becomes a consideration, it is important to find a well made family camping tent. When you find a tent that you really like, check online message boards for honest reactions to the products performance. There are several websites available that are designed to provide consumer opinions.

Once you have found several family camping tents you like, then you can narrow down your selection according to your personal preferences. Some family camping tents are a large one room design, while others have a tunnel between two “rooms” that children find a lot of fun. The best family camping tents are the ones that will fit everyone with a lot of comfort. Though some would say that there is nothing comfortable about a tent, having enough room for everyone is essential for a good trip. If everyone is cramped within the family camping tent, they are not going to sleep well and will be cranky the next morning. If you have a family of five, you should get a tent meant to fit even more people. That way everyone has room to move and even roll in the night. Not everyone sleeps in one position for the entire night. In fact, that is rather rare. Also consider the size and space available in the vehicle that will be used for camping trips. Many models are made to be compact and space saving for smaller vans and cars. These are just some of the things to look for when investing in a family camping tent.

Camping Tips – Where To Set Up Camp

Want to find the perfect spot for setting up camp? Through my many years of camping experience I’ve discovered some good ideas on how to find the perfect spot to set up your camping tent. I want to share these tips with you so that you too will be able to enjoy your camping experience. First off you want to start by finding level ground. No one wants to sleep on an uneven surface! It’s always a good idea to find this flat spot relatively high up and not too close to trees. The tree roots would not be a good place to lie on.

Make sure there are no large stones either. It’s a good idea to make sure the area you pick does not show signs of any water erosion. The last thing you want is to have a flash flood during a large rainstorm come rushing through your tent at night. One of the most important things to do when picking out a camping site is to look up above you and make sure you see a lot of blue sky! The last thing you want is to wake up in the middle of the night with a downed tree or even large tree limbs crashing through your tent.

I actually made this mistake the first time I camped. There was an unexpected windstorm that came through and it knocked down a couple of pretty large branches. Needless to say, it was not a very fun experience, so please be especially careful of this! With just these few tips you will soon discover the best camping sites and this will make your camping experience that much better.

I Want to Tell You How to Save 50-60 Percent Or More Buying Discount Camping Gear

The Number One Best Place To Buy Discount Camping Gear and Equipment

I’m going to tell you where to buy discount camping gear and save at least 60 percent or more! This is the best place I have found to buy new, cheap, closeout, discount camping gear at giveaway prices.

Why take the time to shop for cheap, discount or closeout camping gear camping gear? To save money!

If you have the money to spend by all means spend it on new camping gear if that is what you want to do. Remember though you don’t have to spend every dime you have on camping gear and equipment to have a good time. Oh don’t get me wrong I love the look and feel and the smell of new- but I also like the look and smell and feel of having my money still in my hands too.

Spending hard earned money can really take away from the enjoyment of camping. Camping isn’t suppose to be a rich mans sport.

Camping gear is something you usually buy and then only use once or twice each year and put it back into storage until the next season so save your money when you can.

Most of this camping equipment is meant to last quite a long time. My Coleman camp stove which I bought used at a garage sale is at least twelve years old now and it works as well as it did when it was brand new. You can buy a used one that works like new or a new open box item for half the price of a new one. The same thing goes for tents, sleeping cots, lanterns or anything else you might need.

The Third Best Place To Buy Discount Camping Equipment

This is a no brainier. You can watch out for the sales pages in your local newspaper or pickup up the sales flyers for good deals on camping gear and save a lot by doing so. Especially during the off season. You can also easily spend an hour at your local sporting goods store and purchase enough new equipment to cover the cost of the entire trip if your not careful. That is unless you decide to buy used, discount and closeout camping gear where– that same money could easily have bought four times as much. That’s right, a lot of serious minded campers like myself are choosing to buy and use discount camping gear instead of the pricey new stuff.

If you want to buy brand new closeout merchandise locally I’ve found my best local sources to be: Academy Outdoor, Cabellas, Dicks Sporting Goods, Sears, and Bass Pro Shops. I have found that these stores always have sales on tents and other outdoor equipment. Watch out for their off season deals. Although this is a good way to buy it’s not the cheapest and for me it takes too much time for me.

The Second Best Place To Buy Discount Gear Is

Garage And Yard Sales-

Believe it or not you can find new and used camping gear locally by buying secondhand. If it doesn’t bother you that you are not the original owner, then you are sure to find some really great deals. Second hand doesn’t always mean used. About a year ago my neighbor bought a new never used dual fuel Coleman lantern for $10.00 still in the box.

These are great places to look for lanterns, sleeping bags, tents, camping stoves, and more. Everything you could ever want to go camping with can be found at these garage and yard sales and you can bet it will be far cheaper than you would in your local sporting goods or discount store. This camping gear is usually just as good as your new, it’s name brand gear, you can usually ask the owner question and the best part is that you are saving a lot of money in the process.

You can easily get started by picking up the newspaper on Thursday and Friday and start looking at the garage sale ads as they will usually say camping equipment or fishing and hunting gear. These are the clues. Get over there as soon as you can because good deals sometimes go fast. Garage sales are good and you can find some really good deals but for my taste it’s a little too much work.

The Number One Best Place To Buy Discount Camping Gear And Equipment (in my opinion)

The Number one best place as far as I am concerned is eBay. Many people fail to take advantage of this. I can quickly and easily do a search to find what I am looking for. When I find what I am after I can Look over the buyers feed back rating and if I am satisfied see if he has anything else I am interested in. If he does I will check and see if the seller combines shipping which can save me even more. I can easily save 50-60 percent or more. Many of these sellers are desperate and motivated. A recently saw a used working Coleman propane lantern with the box sell for less than $5.00 plus shipping (to me) would have only been about ten bucks. Fifteen dollars for a great lantern and no driving around using expensive gasoline either.

Camping Equipment Tips

About a month ago I've got some tips on how to organize your camping equipment to make it easier to pack up and get on the road. I got a lot of comments on the subject and decided to write another with just a few more tips.

We all know that camping can be a joyous occasion to bring the entire family together, but there is always a downside to everything! Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to remembering all of the camping equipment needed, and keeping everyone happy. Remember you always, at all costs, have to keep the woman of the house happy. Make sure that there is plenty of clean water and bathroom supplies handy. I know this is a subject that no one wants to talk about but everyone has to deal with but it needs to be done. The camping toilet is a piece of camping equipment that is a luxury to have especially on those 3-5 day camping trips. If you do not have this piece of camping equipment there is an easy solution. I have an extra 3-4 person tent, I grab a 5 gallon bucket and a toilet seat from any local hardware store, I mount the seat on the bucket and put it in the extra tent, instant bathroom. Home made camping equipment is usually cheaper than store bought. You then dig a hole behind the tent to dump the waste in. Trust me the wife may think it's disgusting at first but she will love it in the end and so will you, trust me.

I do have one more tip before I close. When you store your camping equipment make sure it is clean and dry. It will last so much longer, especially your tent. I know a lot of times when your are leaving the camp site you just want to pack up the tent and go but you can do more harm than you think. Ants can destroy your tent and other camping equipment if they are packed up with it. If there is not a clean spot at the campsite to sweep of the inside and the outside of the tent, make sure when you get home to open the tent back up to clean it inside and out. Any insects left on or inside the tent can eat little holes in the fabric and cause the ten to leak from the top or the bottom. The tent is probably the most expensive piece of camping equipment you have. It must be taken care of.

Camping Toilet Options

Have you been looking to buy a camping toilet? These products can be extremely useful – they can help to take much of the stress out of a camping trip or extended holiday. In this article we take a closer look at the options available to you.

The first range of options available are chemical camping toilets. These do much as the name suggests. They are portable toilets that you can take with you on your trip – they make use of chemicals to break down waste.

The key advantage of chemical solutions is that they offer you a lot more control over hygiene standards. This means that they are likely to involve a higher level of cleanliness than that found at many camp sites. This is likely to be true through much of Europe.

So are there any disadvantages? The main one surrounds the chemicals that are used. These can not be described as being particularly friendly to the environment. They may also not be the right choice for you if you have children or pets.

Sadly, some chemical toilets are not as compact as many people may wish. This is unfortunate since it's likely that you'll have a lack of space in your car.

There are folding toilets available but many are rather flimsy looking and make use of bags or liners that are not biodegradable. Once again, this causes problems for those looking to be friendly to the wider environment and their surroundings.

The ideal solution would be something that is portable, does not make use of chemicals and is fully environmentally friendly. The Norwegian armed forces were keen to find just such a solution and helped to develop a product that has become known as the BioToi.

Until recently, the major drawback with these products was that consumers here in the UK were not able to buy them. Fortunately a number of retailer have now made them available for purchase.

They do cost a little more than some solutions but they could be right for you if you're looking for something that is truly portable and that will not harm your surroundings.

Fast and Easy Camping Food

A good meal means different things to different people. However, good eats while camping are important because they can have an impact on the entire trip. I believe good camp food is food that is easy to make and can be made very quickly. Here, are a few tips I have picked up through the years to make good meals:

1. Don’t be afraid to choose basic hamburgers. Whether it is hamburgers or hot dogs, most people find that they like one if not both. By adding these to your cooking menu, you increase your chances of making them happy.

2. Meals Ready To Eat (MREs). These staples of the military can also be great for you. With food that tastes similar to what comes out of a can, these are great because of their quick cooking times. Plus, they are relatively inexpensive as you get up to 30 meals for under $100 in some cases and they pack well as they were designed for traveling.

3. Freeze dried food. The arguments for MREs also apply here. The pricing is much like them and the other benefits are the same.

4. Food in a can. These are good because of their quick cooking and ready to go formats. All you have to do is heat them in a pot and you are good to go. Plus, the left-over cans can be used to help you around the campsite to store smaller items or for target practice.

5. Boxed foods: Rice and noodle dishes, mac and cheese, and other boxed goods work great in the field. Boxed foods are good because they are relatively light weight, tend to have fast cooking times and the materials can be easily disposed of afterwards.

6. Breakfast food: There are about a dozen different types of bars you can choose from: cereal, granola, fruit, etc. Each one is great because they require no cooking and can be carried with you while hiking. This means you may be able to avoid having to build a morning fire on certain days.

7. Trail Mix and More: These work just like the breakfast food bars. Whether it is dried fruit, beef jerky, or a trail mix, they give you a ready supply of carbohydrates and proteins. Great for hiking trips and keeping your overall camping food weight down.

8. Crackers and More: Crackers are a great food for camping because they keep for a long time and can be used with a number of other items, like tuna, cheese, some meats, etc. While camping, these foods taste extra good, so be sure to add them to your camp food list.

9. Fast Menu Options: These examples are great because everyone enjoys them.

a. Taco salad( chips, shredded lettuce, and pinto)

b. Pita Bread Pizza (Pizza sauce, cheddar or mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, pita bread).

10. Drinks for Camping: It is best to avoid drinks that are liquid form. Choose powders to reduce your weight as you can always add water later. Popular camping choices are coffee, cocoa, tea, tang, and Gatorade powder.

These camping foods tend to be crowd pleasers because they are easy to make, easy to carry, and leave little left over trash. Do yourself a favor and try out a few as we are sure they will be good for your group and easier on the cook.
